Course Content : Owner-Builder Contractor

These exams are mandatory and required for the General Contractor license application from the Régie du bâtiment and covers the following subclasses of license from Schedule I:

Also authorizes construction work included in the following subclasses of Schedule II:

2.6  Contractor – Piles and special foundations

3.1  Contractor – Concrete structures

The training designed for Owner‑Builder Contractors provides a comprehensive understanding of the responsibilities, legal obligations, and construction standards associated with the work performed under the subcategories of Annex I, II, and III. Because these contractors are authorized to build for their own account, they must demonstrate a strong command of the regulatory requirements established by the Régie du bâtiment du Québec, along with the management practices essential for delivering safe, compliant, and well‑executed construction projects.

The program covers key topics such as job‑site planning principles, work coordination, and the management of material and human resources, as well as quality‑control methods. Candidates also learn how to interpret plans and specifications, understand the technical requirements specific to concrete, masonry, wood, or metal structures, and apply the safety standards related to excavation work, foundations, exterior cladding, and interior finishing.

Beyond technical knowledge, the training emphasizes the administrative and legal responsibilities of the contractor. This includes contract management, compliance with labour laws, record‑keeping, cost control, and risk assessment related to construction activities. Contractors must be able to oversee every stage of a project—from site preparation to final delivery—while ensuring full compliance with the Québec Construction Code.

The overall objective is to equip Owner‑Builder Contractors with the competence, rigor, and professionalism required to carry out their work safely and responsibly. This includes ensuring occupant protection, the long‑term durability of structures, and the regulatory compliance of every project they undertake.
